Faculty Position in Compassion and Caring: Open-Rank
The Department of Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) in the College of Health and Human Development at The Pennsylvania State University, in coordination with the Bennett Pierce Prevention Research Center, invites applications for a tenured or tenure track position, rank open. The position is accompanied by an Endowed Professorship in Compassion and Caring, and this faculty member will provide leadership in the Program on Empathy, Awareness and Compassion in Education (PEACE) www.prevention.psu.edu/peace-program-empathy-awareness-and-compassion-education) of the Prevention Research Center. PEACE was established in 2009 with the mission to promote health and wellbeing in children, youth and families through the scientific understanding and the promotion of awareness, compassion and empathy. The program is part of the Bennett Pierce Prevention Research Center and comprises faculty, research associates and students whose work focuses on developing a strong multidisciplinary science in this emerging area. The work of PEACE is guided by the central conviction that awareness, compassion and empathy are core dimensions of human nature that contribute to personal development and health. Awareness, compassion and empathy both contribute to and result from personal wellbeing and interpersonal experiences that nurture strong, authentic and life-enhancing relationships. Thus, promoting these qualities in young children and caregivers (parents, teachers) is essential to promoting well-being, strengthening families, and building cohesive communities.
We are particularly interested in a faculty colleague, rank open, who has experience in the field of prevention/developmental science and may have further background in public health, education, psychology, human development and family science, neuroscience, or a related field. Qualifications include experience in basic research or intervention studies that promote caring and compassion in the early years of life. Special emphasis will be given to research that examines risk, resiliency, and/or the effects of promotive interventions, via working with parents, caregivers, and/or teachers, on infants and young children. Areas of research might include one or more of the following: the development of empathy; bonding and attachment formation; sensitive, emotionally available parent-child and/or coparenting relationships; prosocial development and altruism; and conscience/early moral development during the early years of life. Also of relevance would be research focusing on the physiological underpinnings of the above and/or experience working with underserved populations. A successful more senior applicant will be a leader of a program of research, with a strong publication record and a proven track record of securing external funding. A successful junior applicant will show strong promise in these areas. Responsibilities include teaching both undergraduate and graduate level courses as well as mentoring student research. The Department Of Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS): The Department of Human Development and Family Studies (www.hhdev.psu.edu/hdfs<www.hhdev.psu.edu/hdfs>) has a diverse, multi-disciplinary faculty that focuses on individual development from infancy through old age, on family structure and dynamics, on the impact of social/cultural contexts on development and family functioning, and on the design and evaluation of interventions to promote health and development and to prevent disease. A strong research and training program in developmental and prevention methodology is integrated into the Department’s research and graduate education activities.
The Bennett Pierce Prevention Research Center: This person would become an affiliate faculty member of The Bennett Pierce Prevention Research Center (www.prevention.psu.edu<www.prevention.psu.edu>), a prominent interdisciplinary research center in the College of Health and Human Development which was established in 1998 to foster research focused on developmental aspects of risk and prevention. Research projects in the PRC, many funded through NIH, range from etiologic studies to large-scale translation trials examining how families, schools, and communities can work together to promote healthy lifestyles for children, youth, and families. Current research focuses on topics ranging from alcohol and skin cancer studies, to interventions to strengthen families and parenting, to the development and implementation of school-based prevention and intervention programs. Longitudinal research is a hallmark of the Center, and the Center is increasingly involved in research combining prevention science and neuroscience. Center faculty also develop clinical trials of innovative models to promote competence and prevent unhealthy outcomes for children, families, and communities, conduct rigorous research on the translation and dissemination of effective prevention programs in community settings, and conduct evaluation studies designed to inform policy within several state agencies. The Center provides research seminars on prevention science for faculty and graduate students, and coordinates a NIDA-supported training program with the Penn State Methodology Center (methodology.psu.edu/) to foster the integration of prevention and statistical/design methodology in the prevention of substance use and related morbidities (e.g., HIV). The Center is also an active partner in two other training grants in obesity prevention and in interventions aimed at promoting literacy and social/emotional competence in children and youth.
