English/Spanish Bilingual Parent Coach (Video Interaction Project) NYC Health+Hospitals/Bellevue (Manhattan) Center for Child Development, Pediatrics Department
NYC Health + Hospitals seeks a full-time child life specialist, health educator, or equivalent, to work within the Center for Child Development and pediatric primary care as part of an exciting initiative to provide integrated maternal/family health, pediatric primary, and behavioral health care (“IMPACT”). The goal is to provide relationship-based, individualized support to families in the context of pediatric primary care. Responsibilities include:
* Meeting with parents/caregivers and children from birth to 5 years of age, before or after their pediatrics appointment, to discuss developmental goals, provide developmentally appropriate learning or play materials, and discuss ways that parents/caregivers can engage their child in such activities at home (Video Interaction Project) * Creating a short video of parents/caregivers playing and/or reading with their child and then watching it together to provide feedback about their interactions, with a focus on reinforcing positive interactions and noticing missed opportunities * Providing parents/caregivers with a copy of their video and learning/play material to promote parent/caregiver-child engagement at home * Reviewing specific suggestions to improve parent/caregiver-child interactions through play, reading, and daily routines * Collaborating and sharing information with respective pediatricians and other medical and behavioral health care providers * Actively collaborating and coordinating activities and referrals with other hospital units (e.g., Pediatrics, Behavioral Health, Women’s Health) to facilitate warm hand-offs and seamlessly integrated service provision * Performing other related assignments involving integrated pediatric, behavioral, and family healthcare.
Requirements for this position include: 1. A bachelor’s degree, preferably with a focus in health, early childhood education, psychology, or related fields;
2. Master’s degree preferred, in the fields of psychology, education, or public health, and/or with certification as a Child Life Specialist or Health Educator;
3. Strong interpersonal skills for working collaboratively with pediatric and behavioral health staff and a diverse group of families and children;
4. A deep understanding of the impact of attachment, play, shared reading, and daily routines on child development and school readiness; and
5. Demonstrated commitment to prevention-based programming and promotion of educational equity.
** Spanish fluency STRONGLY preferred.
About the facility and program: NYC Health+Hospitals is the largest public hospital network in the country, and NYC H+H/Bellevue is the oldest hospital in the country in addition to being home to a large number of medical firsts in research, science, education, medicine, and medical training. Bellevue is affiliated with NYU School of Medicine. The candidate would work closely with NYC H+H and NYU School of Medicine teams in the Pediatrics, Child Life, and Social Determinants of Health departments as well as with program staff for IMPACT and VIP Center of Excellence.
