The College of Education and Human Ecology (EHE) at The Ohio State University is looking for a Post-Doctoral Researcher-DoDVLS to support the Department of Defense Virtual Lab School (DoDVLS) team within the Department of Human Sciences!

About the Virtual Lab School
Created by experts at The Ohio State University, the Virtual Lab School (VLS) addresses a critical need for an easy to navigate online professional development and resource system that empowers professionals to build their knowledge and skills around research-based practices in child care and youth development. Supported by an extensive repository of professional development videos, research-based content, and relevant, interactive learning materials, the VLS simulates the enriching learning experiences found in university lab school settings.

The VLS system offers distinct tracks for center-based professionals including direct-care providers (infant/toddler, preschool, and school-age), training and curriculum specialists (coaches), and management personnel, as well as a track for home-based care providers who typically care for mixed-age groups. Anchored by 15 Foundational courses that include the 13 Functional Areas of the Child Development Associate competency standards used in early care settings around the world, the Foundational Content covers research-based developmentally appropriate practices for working with children from birth to age 12 across all the functional roles in child and youth care and education settings.

In addition to the Foundational Courses, the VLS features a series of focused topics and other resources that support the development of a highly trained and effective workforce.

Position Overview
The Post-Doctoral Researcher – DoDVLS is an expert in early childhood development and education and will serve as the main coordinator of research and user feedback efforts relative to the DoD Child Development Virtual Laboratory School project (DoDVLS).  This position will assist in grant development and conduct research related to the DoDVLS, which may include pilot testing of tracks and courses or pre/post-tests of efficacy in a community based setting.

This opportunity plays a pivotal role in research coordination which includes the conceptualization of projects, drafting of grant and IRB documents, stewarding proposals through the approval process, as well as helping to hire, train, and oversee research assistants. The selected candidate will collect and analyze data, as well as write manuscripts with the projects’ Principal Investigator (PI) and co-PI for publishing and presentations.

Additionally, a variety of interdisciplinary research experiences will be incorporated into individualized research mentoring plans. Opportunities can be provided for teaching and for research as well as practicum supervision.  This position will require the candidate to establish and maintain working relationships with project sponsors and stakeholders.

Position Environment
The Post-Doctoral Research – DoDVLS reports to the project’s Principal Investigator and co-Principal Investigator. The position is an active team member and works closely with University faculty and staff as well as professionals seeking continued development. The team is customer focused and each member of the team is cross-trained to support one another as needed.

Performance Objectives
In the first 60 to 90 days of employment, the successful candidate for this position will accomplish the following:

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of DoDVLS, college and university policies and procedures
  • Establish pivotal relationships within the DoDVLS client groups, college, and across the university’s child development and research resource units
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of current DoDVLS data collection and analysis processes as well as the current research project management practices

A long-term goal of this role is to write manuscripts for publishing in alignment with PI and project needs.

Experience Requirements
The selected candidate for this position will have demonstrated success in several areas, including:

  • A Doctoral Degree in child development, development psychology, human development and family science, early childhood education, or an appropriate area or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrate expert-level knowledge in early childhood development and education
  • Experience conducting social science research, including a demonstrated ability to analyze data, write for the purposes of scientific study and conduct presentations is required.

Desired requirements include:

  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge and experience with instructional technology or e-learning
  • Experience providing professional development to practicing child development professionals and knowledge of practice-based coaching
  • Knowledge of a variety of research methods
  • Knowledge of the CLASS or other observational tools for early childhood classroom teaching practices is preferred
  • Strong statistical skills, ability to perform HLM and SEM
  • Knowledge of appropriate statistical software such as SAS, SPSS, STATA, M+, etc. preferred

 

Additional Information:

The Targeted Hiring Range for this position is $50,000 to $57,000
